If you are just learning about the oboe, you are about to learn that there is a lot to
learn!

While this article is by no means an exhaustive look at the oboe, we’ll try to cover
the basic stuff to give you a better idea of this beautiful instrument.

The oboe is a double reed (which means that two pieces of wood vibrate together to
make the sound) instrument that is directly descended from the 16th century
shawm. While the shawm might be considered the great grandfather of the oboe, its
sound (which was LOUD and annoying) changed quite a bit before it became the
modern day oboe.

Oboes are usually made of grenadilla wood, but sometimes, in an effort to produce
slightly different tone colors, other woods are used. The oboe has sterling silver
keys and is made up of three “joints:”

  • a lower joint
  • an upper joint
  • and a slightly flared bell

The sound is produced by using a reed made of two blades of cane which vibrate
together.

Pitched in “C,” the oboe’s pitch range starts at the Bb below middle C on the piano
and ends roughly 2 octaves above that, around a G. For the adventurer, higher
notes are possible though less comfortable and less frequently called for in music
written for the oboe.

The oboe has a narrow conical bore, making its timbre focused and penetrating. The
French word for oboe, “hautbois.” Hautbois literally translates to “high-,” “strong-,”
“loud-,” or “principal-wood,” depending on its various spellings. Some people say
that the oboe sounds a bit like a duck. Track down a recording of Prokofiev’s Peter
and the Wolf for a great example of this.

The oboe is often played in groups of two or three in orchestras and bands, and is
used in many combinations for chamber music. It is primarily a melody instrument
and, because of its lyrical and mournful timbre, is often used for very emotional
sections of music.

Good examples include:

  • Stravinsky - Symphony in C
  • Barber - Summer Music
  • Gabriel’s Oboe

One of the oboe’s most important jobs is that of “tuner” in an orchestra. Listen
carefully to the beginning of any orchestra concert with oboes in it and you will hear
the oboe player play a tuning “A” from which the entire orchestra takes their pitch.

There are actually 4 different instruments within the oboe family, which cover the
soprano, alto, tenor, and bass ranges. The oboe itself is the most soprano of its
direct family. The second most common instrument in the oboe family is its tenor
version, the English horn.

The English horn, or “Cor Anglais,” is pitched a 5th below the oboe, in “F,” and is
fingered almost exactly like its smaller sibling. The range of the English horn begins
at a written B below middle C and goes up to about concert “C.” Like the oboe, it
consists of an upper and lower joint, but it has a bulbous bell at the lower end
which makes it look quite different. English horn players also use a bocal, onto
which the reed is attached.

The sound of the English horn is similar in quality to the oboe, but because it is
larger and lower, its timbre is a bit more mysterious and sorrowful. The English
horn is often used in the band and orchestra, though less often in chamber music. It
is quite common for the 2nd oboist of an ensemble to have to “double” on English
horn, having to switch back and forth from the oboe as his/her part dictates.

Famous English horn solos include:

  • Rossini - William Tell Overture
  • Dvorak - New World Symphony

The oboe’s alto family member is the oboe d’amore, which means “oboe of love.”
This instrument looks like a small version of the English horn, with the same
bulbous shaped bell and curved bocal. It sounds a minor 3rd lower than the oboe, is
pitched in concert “A,” and again fingered almost exactly like the oboe.

The oboe d’amore’s sound is truly distinctive, being reminiscent of its soprano and
tenor relatives, but more muted and sweet. It is often used in pairs and most
frequently in Baroque music, especially that of J.S. Bach. Check out the beautiful
solos and duets for oboes d’amore in the following Bach pieces:

  • B Minor Mass
  • Christmas Cantatas
  • Concerto for Oboe D’amore

The oboe d’amore does not often appear in ensemble pieces after the Baroque era,
though one of its most famous orchestra solos was written by Ravel, in Bolero.

The oboe’s bass family member is the Bass oboe, which is the most obscure of the
oboe family members. The bass oboe is pitched in “C,” like the oboe, but sounds an
octave lower than its written pitches. It looks like a very large English horn, and is
played with the same fingerings, but its bocal is more drastically curved.

The popularity of the bass oboe was brief and is rarely used today. One of the few
orchestral pieces which employs the bass oboe is Holst’s The Planets. Its murky and
atmospheric timbre is well suited to a piece about outer space.

The oboe and its relatives all use a double reed, but the reed is different for each
instrument. Basically, the bigger and lower the instrument, the bigger the reed is.
The oboe’s reed is the only reed with an attached cork, the others being on metal
tubes which slip directly onto a bocal. From its soprano to bass ranges, the oboe
family covers a wide spectrum of tones colors, though remains lyrical and poignant
in all its versions.

The oboe is a beautiful instrument to play although it can take quite some time to
master. Even producing a sound can be quite a challenge for a beginner.

Universal life insurance is insurance with convenience of i.e. flexible premium, manageable benefit life insurance policy that accumulates account value. Universal life insurance is an improvement over the ordinary form of life insurance in terms of flexibility. The universal life insurance provides you a cash-in-value but you can make timely withdrawal from your gathered fund.

Universal life insurance is popular amongst people for it allows the policyholder to decide the on premium and benefit whereas the other kinds of policies do not let the policyholder to get the benefits from the life insurance fund till the time of death. Buying a universal life insurance can also protect your loved ones against financial problems that may occur after the insurer dies.

The universal life insurance functions like a high interest bank account because the insurance company puts your premium into an account after deducting nominal charges. The amount so accumulated gets an interest that is also added in the account. The interests are adjusted monthly and not annually. With every premium payment made the accumulation of money in the fund augments. Also the compound interest is earned on the account every month. In universal life insurance withdrawals can be made from cash surrender value. Each withdrawal must be at least $500. You are permitted to withdraw four times in a year. The amount that you withdraw is deducted from the Account Value and the death benefit. While you withdraw or surrender from your account value, you might have to pay surrender charges. The cash surrender value is the Account Value minus any surrender charges and any outstanding loans.

In order to have maximum benefit of the policy the policyholder should avoid repeated withdrawals from his accumulated fund. Withdrawal of money time and again will result in fewer benefits at the time of actual need. Moreover there will occur futility in the years of premium payment if the accumulated fund is just a part of the intended original benefit amount to be considered.

However there is a dark side too to universal life insurance. The problem stems due to the interest rate assumption used by carrier proving to be wrong and consequently in the bad performance of the policy. The policy premiums increase if the returns are not earned that often results in inability to payoff and so the cancellation of the policy. For instance numerous universal life insurance policies were surrendered or cancelled from 1970 to 1980.

But over the years the insurance companies have lowered the rates rendering initial assumptions invalid. It then became the choice of the policyholder to make up for the difference through higher premiums. So despite of purchasing a permanent insurance scheme the policyholders are burdened with rising premiums.

So if you want to save the trouble of increasing premiums, buying a whole life insurance policy is the best idea. Universal life insurance is good if you look want to pay less in present moment but keep it in mind that you might have pay more later if the interest rates do not fluctuate as you expected.

Mansi Aggarwal recommends that you visit Universal Life Insurance for more information.

You worked hard to put yourself in a position to afford that dream weekend cruiser you always wanted. Most likely it was a car you loved when you were growing up and set your mind on buying one at some point in your life. Now you have it. Is it protected properly?

How many people have their dream car properly secured with an appropriate security system? Probably not many. I know I didn’t have a security system for any of the three cars I had. My first car was actually parked outside in my driveway and it wasn’t the best neighborhood.

I am currently without my weekend car, I sold my last one, a 13,000 mile 1987 Buick Grand National, when my daughter was born. One thing is for sure though, I will have a system put in for my next car, when it does come. My mother-in-law’s house was broken into a few days before Christmas last year. She had a lot of her most valuable possessions stolen. She was lucky enough that the police caught the crooks the next day at the pawn shop. But, it caused me to take a closer look at how secure my home was.

I previously thought that if you wanted a really quality system you needed to pay a monthly monitoring fee to one of the big companies such as ADT or Brinks. I soon found out this was not the case at all. You can actually build a much more effective system on your own for far less money than those companies. Only 12.9% of burglars are caught throughout the whole country. I would hate to see my car stolen when I get my next one, which I hope will be soon.

I often talk to many people on the various discussion boards I am a member of and a lot of them are in the same boat I was, they had no idea what they could do for so little money. As a result of technology advancing so quickly you can actually buy color video cameras, a set of three for roughly $170. You can add in a recording device for even less than that. You can buy motion sensors that will turn lights on in your home if any motion is detected in your yard. You can attach speakers that give off the sound of an angry barking dog when motion is detected. I don’t know about you but if I were a crook looking to break in and steal something, like a car, I would not go to the house with the angry dog in the garage. There are endless amounts of possibilities on what you can do to protect your house, garage, or more importantly, that weekend toy. One thing I will be doing for sure is the cameras. In the event my car is stolen this will increase my chances my car will be found or they person that stole my car will be caught because I will have video proof of who took it.

Many car lovers spend thousands of dollars on their cars. They spend hours washing and waxing their rides. They have emotional connections with their cars in most cases. What is a couple hundred dollars to prevent it from being taken? When you think about it, isn’t it a must have for your car?

Being self employed has many benefits. When you are self-employed, you can write off all of your deductions on your taxes. You have the potential to make more income than someone who is employed by someone else. You have the freedom to be your own boss. One of the few times when being self employed has some drawbacks is when you go to get financing for a home or a major purchase. But, here are some things to know that can help you make the mortgage loan process run smoothly when you are self employed.

When verifying income - In general, lenders want to see at least 2 years of self employment history, sometimes they want to see 3 years. They will want to see this history verified in tax returns, usually. Sometimes the lenders will figure your income as being the average income you claimed on your income taxes as profit, not your gross business income. Sometimes the lender will figure your income as the lowest of the two years and sometimes as the highest of the two years. Talk to your mortgage broker or lender and find out which way they verify. Sometimes lenders will figure a portion of your write-offs or deductions back into your income. There are ideas of other ways that a lender may be able to verify your income and if you are self employed it will help you to be able to show a more of your income.

A. Use bank statements as proof of income - Find a lender who will accept 1-2 years of bank statements as proof of income. It is becoming more common nowadays for lenders to verify your income this way. This way usually works better in proving income than going off of your tax returns, because you can usually prove a lot more cash flow than tax returns will show. On your tax returns you usually subtract each and every business expense before you claim any profit. When using bank statements, you are still proving income, this does not put as much emphasis on your credit score or down payment as the stated income or no doc loan will.

B. Do a stated income or no doc loan - These types of loans are done all of the time, where you need no proof of income, you only state on a form what your income is, and you do not need to verify it. This can help if you are self employed and want to state your income as it is and not worry about having the lender average out your income from the last two years instead. Make sure you are accurate in stating your income, because the lender may be able to obtain past taxes from the IRS to confirm it. When you do a stated income loan, this will put more emphasis on your down payment or credit score. So, you will usually need one of these factors to be strong if you want to go this route. Most of the time when you do a stated income or no doc loan, you will be charged a slightly higher interest rate because of the extra risk the lenders carries.

C. Put together a profit & loss statement stating accurately stating your profits and expenses from the last two years. This can be a time consuming project, but it can sometimes be used as income verification for a lender. It is more usable if you have had it signed or verified by your accountant.

There are many ways that lenders can work with you if you are self employed. There are many programs available to help you and if you have a down payment or decent credit, you are almost guaranteed to be able to get approved somewhere. If you love the water and are looking for a unique way to spend some time on it, renting a houseboat is a great way to spend your next vacation. You’ll be sailing down a river or on the briny sea without a care in the world and all the comforts of home.

A standard houseboat comes complete with a fully equipped kitchen - stove, refrigerator, pots, pans, etc. They also usually have a gas grill so that you can cook on the deck if you choose. There’s a bathroom and one or two (sometimes more) bedrooms. Everything is compact and built in, giving you plenty of room to relax and enjoy travel time. When you dock, you just start unfolding and couches turn to beds, etc.

Some may thing that renting a houseboat is inexpensive. Unfortunately, it can be quite costly - especially with the price of gas today. Depending on the size of the houseboat, a weekend trip usually runs around 90 gallons for the weekend and 150 for the week. The rental fee for a houseboat is usually a minimum weekend or weekly rate ranging from $300 for a weekend up. There is also a security deposit required before renting the boat.

Some rental agencies allow pets on the houseboats, others don’t. Some will let pets travel free of charge, others will add an additional security deposit or a small fee.

Most houseboats travel during the day and anchor during the nighttime hours. You also need to keep a close eye on the weather to make sure you don’t get caught in a storm.

It is suggested to operate the boats only during daylight hours. The vacationers can check with the marina for guidance regarding the approved boating areas and weather forecasts. It is advised to board the houseboat at least one to two hours before departure and receive a complete orientation.

To guarantee rental, you should reserve your houseboat several months in advance. They are usually sold out by springtime.

Candles made of gel are often more unique and beautiful than traditional wax candles. There are several properties of gel candles that give them a unique and artistic appearance.

Unlike traditional wax candles, gel candles can be clear or multi-colored, they do not have to be a solid color. Candle makers can embed items in gel candles. Gel candles last twice as long as traditional wax candles. It is important to note that gel candles do burn at higher temperatures than wax candles, so it is vital that people follow all safety precautions when making and burning gel candles.

Gel candle making supply stores have become much more common in recent years. People can buy gel candle-making supplies at many of the same stores that sell traditional waxes.

One reason that gel candle-making supplies are so common is that they provide for more creativity than normal waxes. Gel can be clear or it can have swirls of multiple colors. There are a limitless number of ways that gel candles can be colored.

It is common for gel candle-making supply kits to include small items that can be embedded within the gel of the candle. The designs and figures are viewable through the translucent gel and can look quite stunning. Seashells, beads, and small figurines are just three types of things that can be suspended in the gel.

The gel used to make these candles can last up to twice as long as wax. This means that the candle will burn for twice as long and often provide twice as much fragrance and beauty.

It is vital to note that gel burns at a much higher temperature than other candle making materials, so it is imperative that people protect their skin when making a gel candle. When it comes to making money, what can possibly beat a job you
like? Nothing, that’s what.

And when it comes to writing about your online business, what
could be more fun than blogging?

A timid voice pipes up from the back of the room at this point.
“If you please, Sir,” it virtually squeaks, “what’s a blog?”

There are as many variations on the blog as there are bloggers.
But to put it simply, a blog (or a web log, usually spelled
weblog) is a space on the web that can be used to record
thoughts, day by day.

Blogging can be used as a personal journal or as a space for
like-minded people to come and collaborate, bouncing ideas off
of each other. Online blogging can also be used for personal
rants and journalistic critiques, to collect things such as
recipes or to register memos to one’s family.

Blogging can also be used to put your online business over the
top.

Online blogging only really came into its own about five years
ago. Since its humble beginnings as a private online cache of
comments, helpful hints, raves and thinly disguised personal
ads, the online blog has mushroomed geometrically to become a
marketing tool worth reading up on for every internet based home
business.

Let’s take a look at some specific advantages blogging brings to
online home business opportunities:

Money, money, money!

You’re in business to make money. Blogging online can be used to
generate interest on a number of levels. A popular blog, with
persistent managers, can actually sell advertising space and
link to products and services. In this way, online blogging is
simply one of the best all-around tools for the affiliate
marketing home business.

Interactivity!

It’s as if you were time-warped back to the 1950’s, and you were
invited into the home of a stranger to tell them anything you
wished to tell. In that simpler time, people loved to interact,
and it’s the same today. The hands-on, personal feel of an
online blog creates an atmosphere of almost automatic trust,
and, subliminally, sets up its writers as experts. Used wisely,
these advantages can help sell any product or service.

Flexibility!

This interactive position allows for the utmost flexibility in
stance and reactivity, not to mention the possibility of
remaining on the cutting edge of developments in your field,
worldwide.

A Hand Up!

As your online blog grows, and you continue to interact with
more and more people, you will find your online business
prospect list growing. You will also feel a friendly bond with
the people you interact with. That’s fun!

The energy flow and influx of leads and information will infuse
your home business with a life all its own. And the life force
of a properly nourished online blog can become an awe-inspiring
outward spiral.

After all…online, the sky’s the limit!

#2: YOU TAKE INVENTORY - THEN STOP

As you are moving ahead and changing your thoughts and feeling better, you suddenly stop and look around and look for evidence. What happened to your dreams? You just knew that better job, new car, or increased financial situation was just around the corner. You were mindful, you are thinking more positive than ever. You have been diligent. Yet, what happened? There is no evidence.

Beware, that is your non-conscious trying to trick you! That is the warning sign that you have moved out of your comfort zone and you are being told to get back where you belong. It is not safe here. This is un-chartered territory. Your discomfort will continue to grow. Do not pay it any heed. It is a great sign that you are making progress.

Take a moment and a deep breath. What are you feeling in your body? Chances are you may be feeling discomfort, pain or tension somewhere physically. Another sure sign you are growing.

This has always stopped you before. Sometimes it looked like fear, sometimes disappointment. It does not matter how it disguised itself, it is the way you sabotage yourself. Think back, haven’t you been here, felt this way, or almost close before and resorted to your “old ways?”

Remember the story of the man who planted the seed and kept digging it up to see if it was growing? That is what you are doing. Let it be, let it grow!

The only way you will achieve that dream, be that success, is to keep moving in the direction of your goals. There is no turning back. You have come much farther than you think. Your dreams are right around the corner. They have been there waiting for you, always. You just kept turning around and going back. Go for it, stay the course. You can do it. Inventory is for later, when you are counting your blessings and all that you have manifested. Do not stop now.

Dr. Nancy Heimstra teaches people who don’t know what they want to be when they grow up an easy way to get clear on their life purpose so they can make more money, have better relationships and live the life they always wanted, by taking action.
